My college organised some work experience with Jagex, the creators of RuneScape, it lasted for 5 days and we were tasked with creating a mining game with an toggleable low and high intensity mode, this is what happened.
Day 1
My team and I set ourselves roles and targets to achieve for our game. I was the level designer and I came up with the idea to set our game in a crystal cave with and open roof to a forest and I asked our concept artist to create some art for me to use, after that me and the rest of the team focused on research for our game.
Day 2
After me and my team got the go ahead from our mentor, we all set out of complete our tasks, our concept artist/3D asset creator had sent me the art and they started on assets for the cave, I set to work on creating a rough layout of the environment in Unreal Engine 4 while our programmer got to work on a code that would detect when an ore is being mined and an Ai that would mine for the player when left alone. The other members got to work on the pickaxe and lanterns mechanics.
Day 3
I had started to add the details to the cave using meshes created by our 3D asset creators, these included crystals, rocks and trees. I finished adding a pond and waterfall to the environment on the same day as our programmer finish with the breaking effect, hit condition codes and inventory system. Our programmer also finished an Ai that, if the mouse was not moved in 5 seconds, would go to the nearest ore and start mining.
Day 4
Nearing our due date for the game I only had a few tasks I need to finish, I added in the pickaxe, lantern and ore meshes created by our 3D asset creators, I implemented the code for the hit condition, breaking effect and the inventory system that our programmer had developed, I added a light source to the lantern and moved both to the player view, I added an animation to the pickaxe so it would move when striking an ore, I added the Ai and the Ai mapping to the environment, and I finished creating an material to make the crystals glow.
Day 5
On the last day I was cleaning up the environment, adding some miner details around the cave like grass, vines, bushes and pebbles. I finished the level environment and took screen shots and videos to show off the game me and my team had made.
